Local Luminaries: Keith Doherty on Slavery and Black-Owned Farms in Hastings
Though rarely acknowledged, slavery was a reality in Hastings from 1750 to 1820. Dr. Doherty’s interactive talk will explore the extent and nature of slavery in our village's earliest years. He will also detail the lives of several free Black landowners who established farms in the village from 1799-1827, when slavery was slowly being abolished. Keith Doherty is a former art history professor at Boston University and Harvard. He is also the founder of Historic Homes of New York, which draws on local and academic sources to reveal historical secrets and architectural idiosyncrasies of homes in the Hudson River Valley.

The Hudson Valley Singers
Sunday afternoon concert and conversation sharing the artistic thinking behind The Hudson Valley Singers' well-received performance earlier this year. The Hudson Valley Singers' program features songs from the rich cultural tradition of Yiddish folk music from Ukraine, Poland and Czechoslovakia, touching on themes of love, struggle and resilience, all sung in Yiddish, with a few original and crowd pleasing solos, accompanied by Klezmer musicians. Eugene Sirotkine, Artistic Director, will share his vision and insights behind the musical selection for this timely repertoire of ancient folk tunes many have not had the opportunity to hear.
