Hastings-on-Hudson — Each year, the last Monday of May brings Memorial Day, the federal holiday for honoring and remembering those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Like many towns throughout the US, Hastings-on-Hudson has an annual parade to mark the occasion. This year, the Village held its annual Memorial Day parade on Sunday, May 26th. Led by Grand Marshal Greg Muriak and Poppy Girl Penny Snyder, the parade wound its way through downtown Hastings.
The Westchester Chordsmen sang the National Anthem in honor of the Honorable Judge Joseph Anthony DiSalvo. Members of the US military who were in New York for Fleet Week and Rear Admiral Wesley R. McCall joined the parade and took part in the Memorial Day Ceremony.
The parade included members of the US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, Hastings-on-Hudson James Daley Post 200, Hastings-on-Hudson Admiral Farragut Post 1195, Hastings-on-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department & Ambulance Corps, Hastings-on-Hudson Little League, Hastings-on-Hudson Rec Basketball, Hastings-on-Hudson Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, the Hastings Mothers’ Club, the Hastings Southside Social & Athletic Club, Friends of the Hastings Library, and many other community groups.
In the days leading up to the parade, downtown Hastings was also decorated with many American flags and signs honoring those who served our country.
Marching bands provided live music throughout the parade.
Hastings doesn’t only honor veterans on Memorial Day. The village is a “Purple Heart Village” with a plaque on Maple Avenue and Spring Street that reads “Now therefore be it resolved, by order of the Board of Trustees of the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson, does hereby declare that the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson is ‘A Purple Heart Village’ and in so doing recognizes the dedication and sacrifices of all men and women in the United States Military who have valiantly served their country to protect the freedoms that are a birthright of all Americans.”
