Hastings-on-Hudson — On Sunday, June 23rd, Hastings’ Quarry Park was celebrated with a dedication, ribbon-cutting ceremony, living history characters, live music, and more.
The 5.5-acre park, located near Washington Avenue along the Old Croton Aqueduct, was once a working quarry. Now, it’s a native plant sanctuary and tranquil greenspace for all to enjoy.
Many braved the heat for the opening ceremony:
Hastings Mayor Nicola Armacost, Greenburgh Town Councilwoman Joy Haber, Assemblymember Mary Jane Shimsky, President and Hudson Riverkeeper Tracy Brown and NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins enjoy the day:
Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct Board Member Tom Tarnowski as Elisha Bloomer and Steve Oakes, Park Manager of the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park. In 1835, Bloomer leased quarry land from George Harvey to construct an incline narrow-gauge railroad to haul rough marble blocks from Harvey’s Quarry down to the wharf.
Christina Lomolino basks in the glow of opening day and introduces the Friends of Quarry Park:
Revelers in the Bash The Trash fanfare parade march with instruments made from recyclables, representing the history of the Quarry as a town dump from 1964-2002, and how that never will happen again:
Chilled food and drinks kept the crowd cool thanks to The Fearless Cooking Co., Hastings Bistro House and Bread and Brine:
Gay Haubner of NYC portrays Quarry owner Alice Langmuir. In 1936, Arthur and Alice Langmuir began transforming the Quarry into a lushly landscaped park, inspired by Buttes Chaumont, a popular public park and former quarry in Paris:
There was live music with the Quarry Gang Bluegrass Jam. Band members: Josh Saltzman - Guitar, Josh Suniewick - Bass, Ethan Abbott - Mandolin, Ian Moore - Fiddle:
